Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC)

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry has initiated a project on Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) to curb "digital monopolies".

This is a step in the direction of making e-commerce processes open source, thus creating a platform that can be utilised by all online retailers.

The department is also appointing an advisory committee for its Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) project.

ONDC is globally first-of-its-kind initiative that aims to democratise Digital Commerce, moving it from a platform-centric model to an open-network.

As UPI is to the digital payment domain, ONDC is to e-commerce in India.

ONDC will enable, buyers and sellers to be digitally visible and transact through an open network, no matter what platform/application they use.

Making a software or a process open-source means that the code or the steps of that process is made available freely for others to use, redistribute and modify it.

ONDC is expected to digitise the entire value chain, standardise operations, promote inclusion of suppliers, derive efficiency in logistics and enhance value for consumers.
