Why in news ?
ICAO (The International Civil Aviation Organisation) last week ruled it had the jurisdiction
to determine a dispute brought by Qatar, accusing its neighbours of violating an agreement that
regulates the free passage of passenger planes through foreign airspace.
What is International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)
International Civil Aviation Organisation is a specialised body of United Nations, that is responsible
to develop principles and techniques for smooth international air navigation.
The organisation having headquarter in Canada is also tasked with planning and development of
international air transport to ensure safety and sustainable growth.
ICAO also defines protocols for air accident investigation, to be followed by transport
safety authorities in countries signatory to the Chicago Convention on International
Air Navigation Commission (ANC), composed of 19 commissioners is a technical body of ICAO,
tasked with development of international Standards And Recommended Practices. Standard and
recommendations approved by the Commission are sent to the Council(Political body of ICAO)
for consultation and coordination with the Member States before final adoption.
