Cauvery Water Management Scheme 2018

Why in news ?
Supreme Court has ordered centre to formulate a scheme for Cauvery on "Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal's" order. After three months of the order The "Union Ministry of Water Resources" has issued a notification for the same.

As per the scheme named "Cauvery Water Management Scheme, 2018" the sharing of Cauvery water between "Karnataka, Kerela, Tamilnadu and Poducherry" has to be decided by "Cauvery Water Management Authority" and the "Cauvery Water Regulation Committee".

Both "Cauvery Water Management Authority" and "Cauvery Water Regulation Committee" created under the scheme has separate roles, the authority will be responsible for apportionment, regulation and control of Cauvery water while the committee will monitor the daily water levels, inflows and storage position at major reservoirs storing the Cauvery water.

Cauvery Water Management Authority

The authority will have following duties:
1) Regulate the release of water by Karnataka to Tamil Nadu from the Billigundulu gauge and discharge station.
2) Reservoirs supervisions and to determine the total residual storage in reservoirs.
3) Decide on the share of each State, and determine the withdrawals by each State.

The authority will comprise of following members:
1) Headed by the Chairman.
2) A senior and eminent engineer or a Secretary/Additional Secretary-level executive with experience in handling inter-state water disputes.
3) Two whole-time members.
4) Six part-time members one each nominated from the riparian States.
5) A Secretary from the Central Water Engineering Services cadre, without voting right

In case of deficiency in the water availability, the reduction of water will be decided on voting by the member. To create new water storage facilities states' proposals will also be considered.

Cauvery Water Regulation Committee

The Committee will collect details such as storage, inflows and water levels at Hemavathy, Harangi, Krishnarajasagara, Kabini, Mettur, Bhavanisagar, Amaravathy and Banasurasagar reservoirs on a daily basis and prepare periodical reports on water account in these reservoirs on a monthly and seasonal basis. Based on these reports, the Authority will finalise on the quantum of share of water.

The committee will comprise of following members:
1) Headed by Whole-Time Member (Water Resources) of the Authority.
2) Representatives from the riparian States, the India Meteorological Department, the Central Water Commission, Ministry of Agriculture.
3) A Member Secretary.

The committee will be based on Bengaluru to meet every 10 days during the monsoon months of June to October.



INS Sahyadri and RIMPAC

Why in news ?
INS Sahyadri participating in RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific Exercise) has portrayed the idea of integrating yoga into daily life during extended deployments for ships.

What is RIMPAC ?

RIMPAC(Rim of the Pacific Exercise) is the world's largest international maritime exercise. 26th edition of RIMPAC, Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) was hosted by US on Hawaii coast.

The exercise was attended by 25,000 personnel and more than 45 surface ships and submarines from 25 countries. China has attended earlier versions of the exercise in 2014 and 2016 but was not present this time because of being dis-invited by US citing China?s military actions in the South China Sea.

What is INS Sahyadri ?

INS Sahyadri (F49) is a Shivalik-class stealth multi-role frigate built for the Indian Navy. This class features improved stealth and land attack capabilities over the preceding Talwar-class frigates.

INS Sahyadri, has potrayed yoga to ensure good health and high morale of personnel on board during deployment in RIMPAC(Rim of the Pacific Exercise). INS Sahyadri was also part of trilateral Malabar war games with Japan and the U.S. off the Coast of Guam.



Instant e-PAN based on Aadhaar

Why in news ?
Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), has launched Instant e-PAN, which will have same name and DOB. gender, mobile number and address as in the Aadhaar.

More in news
New e-PAN will be available for Individuals only and not Hindu Undivided Family, firms, trusts and companies. The PAN will be allotted to the applicant through electronic Aadhaar-based verification system in a few seconds and PAN card will be send to specified address through post.

As per Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Act, every person having PAN as on July 1, 2017 and is eligible for getting an Aadhar is bound to intimate tax officials of his Aadhaar number.

Aadhaar is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to an Indian resident, PAN is a 10-digit alphanumeric number allotted by the Income Tax Department to a person, firm or entity.



Agni-V Missile - Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) developed by DRDO

Why in news ?
Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM), Agni V is going to be inducted into the nuclear arsenal of India soon.

More about Agni-V Missile

1) Agni-V is an Inter-continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
2) It is part of series of Missiles systems under Integrated Guided Missile Development Program.
3) It has a range of over 5,000 KM and is capable of carrying nuclear warhead.
4) Agni-V is a solid-fuelled Missile which can hit any target in China, including Beijing.
5) The missile is easy to transport by road through the utilisation of a canister-launch missile system which is distinct from those of the earlier Agni missiles.


India currently has Agni I with a 700-km range, Agni II with a 2,000-km range, Agni III and Agni IV with a 2,500-km to more than 3,500-km range.
