As per a review report of NITI Aayog - The National Nutrition Mission (Poshan Abhiyaan) must be stepped up in order to meet the targets set by the Centre to reduce stunting, wasting, and anaemia by 2022.

It report also recommends improved "water, sanitation, hand washing with soap and hygienic disposal of children's stools".

The National Nutrition Mission (Poshan Abhiyaan)

The National Nutrition Mission (Poshan Abhiyaan) was launched by the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) in 2018 as government's flagship programme to improve nutritional outcomes for children, pregnant women and lactating mothers.

Poshan Abhiyaa is world's largest nutrition programme to reduce stunting and wasting by 2% per year (total 6% until 2022) among children and anaemia by 3% per year (total 9% until 2022) among children, adolescent girls and pregnant women and lactating mothers.

The mission ensures convergence with various programmes i.e., Anganwadi Services, Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), Scheme for Adolescent Girls (SAG) of MWCD Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), National Health Mission (NHM), Swachh-Bharat Mission, Public Distribution System (PDS), Department Food & Public Distribution, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation.

Under the Poshan Abhiyaan, every year, the month of September is observed as a Poshan Maah. Several activities are undertaken to spread awareness of nutrition in the community.

According to the National Family Health Survey-4 2016 - More than a third of children under five suffer from stunting and wasting and 40% of children between one and four are anaemic. Over 50% of pregnant and non-pregnant women were found to be anaemic.

Another component of the mission is the gradual scaling up of the interventions under the World Bank assisted Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Systems.

National Council on Nutrition (NCN)

The National Council on India's Nutritional Challenges has been set up under the Poshan Abhiyaan, with the Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog as its Chairperson.

The council is also called the National Council on Nutrition (NCN). The NCN offers policy directions to address nutritional challenges and review programmes for the same.

It is a national-level coordination and convergence body on nutrition.

POSHAN tracker App

POSHAN tracker App was launched in March 2021 by Women and Child Development Ministry to strengthen and bring transparency in nutrition delivery services and real-time monitoring of nutritional outcomes.

The app gives a 360-degree view and tracking of the anganwadi centre, nutrition service deliveries and complete beneficiary management for pregnant women, lactating mothers and children.

Mission Poshan 2.0

Mission Poshan 2.0 (Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0) has been announced in the Budget 2021-2022 as an integrated nutrition support programme, to strengthen nutritional content, delivery, outreach and outcomes with focus on developing practices that nurture health, wellness and immunity to disease and malnutrition.
