The major industries in the Indian Economy are Iron & Steel, Textiles, Jute, Sugar, Cement, Paper, Petrochemical, Automobile, Information Technology (IT), and Banking & Insurance.
Steel Industry
Most of the iron and steel plants of India such as Jamshedpur, Burnpur, Durgapur are located in Jharkhand, West Bengal, Orissa and Chhattisgarh. These states are very rich in coal and iron ore deposits and are important producers of these materials.
Visveswaraya Iron and Steel Works at Bhadravati, Karnataka is a major exception which is located far away from the main coal-producing areas of the country.
The other raw materials used in this industry are manganese, limestone, dolomite, chromite, silica, etc.
Stainless steel is a corrosion-resistant alloy of iron, chromium and, in some cases, nickel and other metals.

Aluminium Industry
Aluminium is the 2nd most important industry after the iron and steel industry. The plant for obtaining Alumina from bauxite ore for aluminium plants is located near the cheap sources of energy i.e., electricity & hydel power supply.
For producing 1 tonne of aluminium, 6 tonnes of bauxite is required.
Aluminium smelting is the process of extracting aluminium from its oxide, alumina, generally by the Hall-Heroult process. Alumina is extracted from the ore bauxite by means of the Bayer process at an alumina refinery.
The industry is power intensive as 30 to 35% of cost of production is accounted for by power.
Bauxite mining sites in India are: Orissa, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh & Madhya Pradesh.
